Dispersed and Primitive Camping

UPDATE:
While we have camped here many
times over the years due to the proximity
to Bend, between all the new trails and
and people, it would not be recommended
these days. Leaving the web page up
because there are some good photos.

South from Bend, Oregon.
No established campsites
Find a level spot to park and that is that.
There are several better places to camp...
See listing at bottom of this page.

Railroad Tracks through Lava Lands

You can camp beside the towering walls
of a lava flow. The train tracks go right
through the lava fields making an abstract
photo. There are established trails.
Benham Falls is just a short walk.

There are several other dispersed campsites
in the area, you just have to find them.

RAILROAD TRACKS
TO THE RIVER

Lava Lands Visitor Center is at the
junction of Hwy.97 and Road#9702.
You can drive to the top of Lava Butte.
(They spent plenty of tax dollars to build
the Visitor Center, but forgot to budget
enough to keep it open to the public.
Closed on Mondays and Tuesdays...)

Benham Falls is 4 miles on Road#9702
Recreation Pass Required / $5 Daily Fee
At the end of Road#9702 is the parking
area for Benham Falls Trailhead.
Vaulted toilet and garbage service.
Day Use Only

If you click on image and enlarge it, there is an old
fire tower on top of Lava Butte. As little kids, we used
to think this was where Santa Clause lived... least that
was what the grandparents had us to believe.

DIRECTIONS:
From Bend take Hwy.97 south
(Milepost 149-150)
Turn towards Lava Lands Visitor Center.
Before the entrance gate turn on Road #9702
Go towards Benham Falls Recreation Area.
Before the railroad tracks you will see Road #500
It is about 1/4 mile to the edge of the lava field.

Snow on Road 9702
Snow on Road #9702
It mostly melted by the next day.

Lava Cast Forest
Check out the Lava Cast Forest

It is unique how the lava made casts around
the trees, which are now holes in the ground,
with the molds are left as evidence.
