GUNGA DIN HISTORICAL MARKER
Point of Historical Interest
Located on Horseshoe Meadow Road
In 1938, this hill area, among many others in
the Alabama Hills, served as a stand-in for the
hill country of Northern India when RKO made
the classic adventure film,'Gunga Din'. Directed
by George Stevens, the epic starred Cary Grant,
Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Victor McLaglen and Joan
Fontaine with Sam Jaffe as Gunga Din, the
waterboy who wanted so much to be a soldier.

DIRECTIONS:
From Lone Pine, CA / Hwy.395
(At the only stop light in town)
Turn west on Whitney Portal Road
In 3 miles turn left on Horseshoe Meadow Road
Gunga Din Historic Plaque 1/2 mile on left
Park near the Gunga Din Historic plaque
Walk down the dirt road and Hells Gate
Arch is about a hundred feet on the right.

Alabama Hills Recreation Area

Alabama Hills were named in the 1860's during
the Civil War by Southern sympathizers in honor
of the Confederate warship CSS Alabama. The
Alabama Hills Recreation Area was dedicated
in 1969 by Bureau of Land Management and
encompasses almost 30,000 acres.
