CHOPAKA LAKE CAMP AND PICNIC AREA
WASHINGTON STATE DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Also: TOATS COULEE CAMP

This area of NE Washington is called
"Land of Many Lakes". You would think
there would be more campgrounds, but is
kind of limited, mostly private lands.

Chopaka Camp and Picnic Area is a good place.
There were several other campers, but it is still
quiet. There are no motorized boats and fly fishing
only. There are established campsites with
picnic tables, metal firerings and vaulted toilet.
There is a water pump that works, but it takes
several pumps to get it primed, so don't give up.

Chopaka Lake

Hillside
Chopaka Camp

There is a trail along the lake's edge. If you
follow it about 1/2 mile to the north end of
the lake and there are some great campsites.
Someone built a picnic table that's pretty
awesome(See photo below). There is also
a chair chainsawed from an old log that is
very comfortable. Several flat grassy areas
to set up a tent.

DIRECTIONS:
From Loomis
Go north about two miles towards Nighthawk.
Turn left on Toats Coulee Road.
You will see Chopaka Grade, the road cuts steeply
up the side of the mountain. From here are no signs
or markers. After going up the hill about 5 miles,
there will be a split in the road (This is the second split).
Go right, down the hill into a valley, the road ends at
Chopaka Camp and Picnic Area, which is on Chopaka Lake.

You might be reluctant to drive up the Chopaka Grade.
When you turn on Toats Creek Road you will see it
cutting steeply up the mountain side. It is a dirt road
with the usual washboards and such, but it is one of
the steeper grades I've been on. It just keeps going up
and up. It was tough, but not impossible. If it rained
or snowed might pose a problem.

WARNING: Make sure you have good brakes!
Five miles of steep grades with limited pullouts.

Picnic Table

About 1/2 mile from Chopaka Camp.

Toats Coulee Camp is okay, at least it is free and
there is a paved road all the way to the campground..
There are a couple primitive camps just before
Toats Coulee Camp. If going to Toats Coulee Camp,
stay on Touts Coulee Road and a couple of miles
you will see the camp to the left.
