HOW TO MAKE COFFEE
Here are some basic guidelines to make
good coffee when out in the backwoods.

A percolator would be preferred, but
cowboy style coffee is also good and
more convienant.

It is important to use fresh coffee beans.
To keep your coffee beans tasting their
freshest, store in an airtight, light-blocking
container. Keep in a dry, cool place.

Keep the coffee pot clean
(Rinse and wipe dry).
Use clean, cold water.
It is always best to grind the coffee beans
just before brewing, but requires a grinder.
We usually grind the beans at the store.
(The best way to grind coffee beans is
with two rocks,  like Indian grinding
stones, but it takes longer than to
actually brew the coffee.

HOW TO MAKE COWBOY COFFEE
Most people have never made coffee using
the cowboy style, but it is fast, easy and
makes a fantastic cup of joe. There are
less parts to clean than a percolator.
Give  it a try and you might be hooked.

COWBOY COFFEE - METHOD 1
Fill a pan or pot with water and add the
desired amount of coffee. The coffee
grounds will float on top of the water.
Bring water to just below the boiling
point and remove from heat source.
Tap the side of the pot with a spoon
and the grounds sink to the bottom.

Tapping the pot with a spoon is the classic
style, but you can give the pot a shake and
the grounds will sink to the bottom.

COWBOY COFFEE - METHOD 2
When making coffee you don't want it to
actually boil or it will have a burnt taste.
This is for people who forget to remove
the heat source when the coffee starts to
boil as described above. With this method
you bring the water to a boil, remove from
the heat source, then pour the coffee grounds
on top. Wait a couple minutes, then tap the
side of the pot and the grounds will sink to
the bottom.

We usually make a full pot and then use
a thermos to keep it hot.

FROM THE BLOG
We used to brew our coffee over the
campfire, but one day it was too windy
and decided to make it inside the car. It
worked perfect. Making the coffee in the
car means we can stop almost anywhere
a brew a fresh pot. Using a dog leash we
hang the coffee pot from the visor and
rear view mirror, then place a propane
torch under it.

Most people consider us crazy...

THE PLUMBERS TORCH
Use the 400g. blue propane cylinder
(TX-9 Container) that you buy at any
hardware store and are usually reasonably
priced. You will also need the torch head,
a one time purchase of about $15.

Propane Warning

We use the camper's 9 cup coffee pots that
are lightweight and have the handle on top.
They should cost less than $20. With the
cowboy coffee method you don't need the
lid or
perculator basket pieces.

WARNING:
If you burn down your car, that is your
problem. Stay in view of the torch at all
times in case of tip over. Follow all directions
on cylinder.
