Mann Lake
Mann Lake

Mann Lake glistens like a jewel on the edge
of the Alvord Desert. It's water reflects the steep
east rim of Steens Mountain which rises nearly
5,000 feet above the valley floor. Mountain,
desert and basin come together here, creating
a haven for a great diversity of life.

STEENS MAP INFORMATION:
Named after Major Enoch Steen who was sent
by the US Army to protect early settlers in the
area from Indian attacks in 1980. His party named
many prominent topographic features, including
Steens Mountains where they were reported to be
pursuing a band of Indians. Most of the military posts
were abandoned in 1869.
Designated as the Steens
Mountain Recreation Lands since 1972 and adminis-
tered by BLM, primarily for it's recreational values.
