Ken Norton vs Muhammad Ali 1973

_ MOVING RIGHT FROM LEFT - Muhammad Ali, left, moves away from left thrown by Ken Norton during yesterday's 12-round heavyweight bout at the Sports Arena in San Diego, Calif. Norton, a comparative unknown who served as a sparring partner for ex-heavyweight champion Joe Frazier, won the fight on a split decision.

_ SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ken
Norton broke Muhammad Ali's
jaw in the first round, gave
him a taste of his own brand of
mocking medicine and vaulted
from the league of what he
calls "ham and egg" fighters
with a 12-round split decision
Saturday over the former world
heavyweight champion.
_ The loss all but slammed the
door on Ali's plans to challenge
George Foreman, the current
heavyweight king, and left the
division even further out of
focus than it had been after
Foreman knocked out Joe Fra-
zier for the title earlier this
year.
